Direct and Indirect Consciousness

چکیده
This text is pp. 042343-042354 in the Cairns Nachlass held in the Archival Repository of the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology, Inc. at the University of Memphis. It is a typescript with corrections by the author on several pages. There was originally no title, but there is the date “August 24, 1954” at the head of the first page. It seems the script for a lecture and it seems complete, but there are no indications of its occasion. Since that was when he was beginning in the Department of Philosophy of the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at the New School for Social Research, it might have been designed to introduce the new professor and might have been presented to the student club, but this is a speculation. We have added the title on internal grounds and corrected several typographical errors. The transcription was made by Daniel Marcelle, the William F. Dietrich Fellow at Florida Atlantic University during 2003-2006, it was edited by Lester Embree, and their work has been reviewed by Fred Kersten and Richard Zaner.

Direct Realism and Perceptual Consciousness
In The Problem of Perception, A.D. Smith’s central aim is to defend the view that we can directly perceive ordinary objects, such as cups, keys and the like. The book is organized around the two arguments that Smith considers to be serious threats to the possibility of direct perception: the argument from illusion, and the argument from hallucination. The argument from illusion threatens this p...
متن کاملThe Moral Insignificance of Self‐consciousness
In this paper, I examine the claim that self-consciousness is highly morally significant, such that the fact that an entity is self-conscious generates strong moral reasons against harming or killing that entity. This claim is apparently very intuitive, but I argue it is false. I consider two ways to defend this claim: one indirect, the other direct. The best-known arguments relevant to self-co...
متن کاملQuantum and Classical Hopfield-like Neural Networks: Two Modes of Consciousness and Psycholinguistic and Psychotherapeutic Implications
Quantum bases of consciousness and free will are considered with implications of two cognitive modes of consciousness (direct religious/creative, characteristic of quantum-coherent transitional and altered states of consciousness, and indirect perceptually/rationally mediated, characteristic of classically-reduced normal states of consciousness), as well as conditions of transformations of one ...
متن کاملTheories and measures of consciousness develop together q Anil
Persaud, McLeod, and Cowey (2007b) dispute my claim that ‘‘post-decision wagering [PDW] cannot supply a direct behavioral measure of consciousness’’ (Seth, 2007), in which a ‘‘direct measure’’ is one that transparently reflects its target property, as a ruler directly measures length. Here I defend this claim and argue in favour of a virtuous circularity among measures, theories, and data. Beha...

To do so, 110 female EFL learners, between the ages of 15 and 18, were randomly assigned into four experimental groups to receive four different kinds of treatments, namely product-based instruction with direc...
